The J-15 is a single seat twin engine carrier based fighter jet developed by China based on the T-10K-3 prototype obtained from Ukraine and the domestically produced J-11 fighter jet.
J-15 is very similar in appearance to the Russian made Su-33, but it incorporates technology from the J-11B. On the basis of the J-11, the addition of duckwings and the installation of two high-power engines have enabled the folding of the wings. New systems such as lift devices, landing gear, and arresting hooks have been designed, enabling the aircraft to achieve the required flight characteristics for landing while maintaining excellent combat performance conditions.
The Su-33 is a carrier based aircraft developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau on April 18, 1984, based on the Su-27 fighter jet, to complement the Soviet Navy's Kiev class aircraft carrier improvement project 1143.5 aircraft carrier. It is also the standard carrier based aircraft of the Varyag aircraft carrier. Initially designed as the Su-27K, a total of nine prototypes (Su-27K T-10-1~9) were produced by 1988, two of which were tested at the Nitka Carrier based Aircraft Training Center in Ukraine.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, these two Su-27Ks were designated as Ukrainian property, and Ukraine was unable to carry out further development of the Su-27Ks and could only seal them. At the beginning of this century, China obtained one of the T-10-K-3 aircraft from Ukraine, which undoubtedly accelerated the development of Chinese carrier based aircraft.
On August 31, 2009, the J-15 carrier based fighter successfully made its maiden flight in Shenyang.
