Here is my first 4B Corsair skin and from the Checkerboard squadron! Skin requested by #Torva_Messor completed!
Starting off in WWII, the Marine Fighting Squadron VMFA-312 stared off using the Goodyear FG-1D Corsairs in their campaign against the Empire of Japan in the Pacific. They would taste first blood when they shot down eight Zero’s off the Okinawa area South of Japan. Their Corsair’s easily identified by the sporting of the unit’s signature “checkerboard” on the cowl and rudder sections.
The squadron would continue their support there until the end of hostilities.
The squadron would return home for further training with the new F7F-3 Tigercats but then transitioning to the 4 Hog Corsairs using both 4 and canon wielding 4B variants.

When the Korean War hostilities arose, the squadron was redeployed to the region, first aboard the USS BATAAN providing escort and blockade missions for the taskforce. It would then join the force on the USS BAIROKU and later the USS SICILY where this livery is based from. There, the Checkerboards would become the first piston engine squadron to shoot down a jet aircraft. This livery belongs to Captain Jesse Gregory Folmar was the pilot to do so.

On September 10th 1952, a mission was called which required maximum force to provide close air support due to the threat of communist aircraft, mostly the feared MiG-15 jet. On this mission, Captain Folmar was leading one of the divisions and during his flight, he and his wingman Lt. Walter E. Daniels, noticed a pair of MiGs preparing an attack run on them, so they turned into the enemy aircraft.

Upon engaging, they would spot an additional two MiGs from their rear in which they also banked into, avoiding the canon rounds fired by the MiGs. As one of the MiG’s overshot, Folmar quickly turned inside it as it attempted to bank and climb. In doing so, it made a horrible mistake in engaging the Corsair in a turning fight which allowed the Captain to feed it hot canon lead which crippled the MiG forcing the pilot to eject.
Both the Captain and Daniels resumed their defensive maneuvers when suddenly were engaged by another four MiGs. Seeing as their odds were stacked against them, Folmar decided to head back home so they broke off and hard dived when he heard and felt the MiG tracers hit his left wing, crippling his wing enough to bail out just before another MiG made its pass. Once he opened his chute, he could hear the MiGs continuing their attack on his stricken Corsair as it hit the water below. A total of seven MiGs were counted in the area after the attack, which left as soon as Folmar’s Corsair hit the water. This allowed the rescue crew to safely pick him up and return back to the carrier. Daniels was also able to escape safely.

Captain Folmar would continue his service, next flying a 5N Corsair night fighter, with his MiG kill mark on his aircraft.
