China conducted formal inspections and test flight evaluations of the US F-15 Eagle fighter jet in the mid-1980s, but ultimately did not introduce it.
It mainly occurred in the mid to late 1980s, during the honeymoon period of military cooperation between China and the United States.
Chinese pilots were selected to conduct test flights and technical evaluations of the F-15B two seater model under specific conditions both domestically and abroad. The aerodynamic layout, radar performance, and beyond line of sight combat capability were highly evaluated.
In the 1978 report on the plan for introducing aviation industry technology submitted by the Ministry of Aviation, the F-15 was listed as one of the preferred imported aircraft models, with the intention of drawing on its technology to improve the level of domestic fighter jets.
But at that time, the unit price of F-15 was over 30 million US dollars, exceeding the budget capacity of China's defense at that time.
Although this inspection did not lead to a transaction, it provided the Chinese Air Force with a clear understanding of the advanced standards of Western heavy fighters, and provided important reference coordinates for the development of the aviation industry in the future.
If it enters service with the Chinese Air Force, it will be equipped with new PL-4A and PL-5B missiles.
